Day 48

October 7, 2010 - Xi'an, Shaanxi Provence, China

Today marks the second (in a series of 2...so far) of my posts about Xi'an's outdoor art. Yesterday's post was about a number of officially sanctioned art pieces along the street. Today, I have some photographs from a nearby alleyway of graffiti. Yesterday, legal outdoor art, today, (theoretically) illegal outdoor art.

Now, I said "theoretically" illegal because I don't know for sure. Is this sort of thing illegal in America? Yeah, but maybe it isn't here. I don't know, for sure. Still, I think this work is brilliant. Would it be so awful to give kids a place to do this sort of thing? Somewhere they could express themselves. Throwing people in jail for painting just seems so...backwards.

Well, no museum again today. I just think I need to set out earlier than I have been. Oh well.

I did go out today, however. I went up Chang An about 5 or 6 blocks to snaps so photos of all of the statuary on the roadside. There are A LOT of them, so forgive me for this photo heavy post. But, please enjoy these art pieces:















































































This city is full of art. I wish St. Augustine was a bit more like this, I wish the city would give up its idea of "historic." I mean, Xi'an is more than 2000 years old, and they don't spend their time going around making people paint their houses a certain color or use only one type of shutter. Maybe just a nice sculpture garden? All by itself? Not encroaching on the "history."
