October 24 - October 26, 2010 - Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, China
The zoo was a lot of fun, and not quite as far out of town as we had thought. But, still pretty far by tiny, rickety bus. It would have been nice to see a panda or two, and hopefully I'll manage it before I come home. The irony that I might have a better chance of seeing a panda in an American zoo is not lost on me.
The weather is shifting again. And quickly. The fall days are already beginning to feel like winter ones, so I'll need to buy a coat. That will be this week's "big" adventure. Coat-buying! Woo. Oh, and Halloween is coming up. Not too sure how that is going to pan out. We'll see, I guess.
OK, back to class, then.

Day 39
September 28, 2010 - Xi'an, Shaanxi Provence, China
Wednesday 2.0, or Tuesday, if you prefer.
The rain has stopped, and I'm struck by an odd revelation. OK, revelation is too strong a word, I had thought of this before but somehow the weather brought it into sharp focus: It is SO dry here. Yes, I know, it was raining for the last several days, I get that, but when it isn't raining? Zero humidity. I've never lived anywhere this dry. My skin is flaky, I have dandruff suddenly, my lips are chapped. I had always hated the humidity in Florida, but I guess my body had gotten used to it. I mean, I sweat here, but I walk A LOT. A lot, a lot. Up hills, down hills, over valleys, across streets, astride stairs, beside sidewalks, through crosswalks, atop overpasses, upon escalators, betwixt promenades. If I can balance even one foot on it, I walk on it, as is the custom here. But my skin has been sapped of its natural oils. If I had grown up here instead of Florida, I may never have had a pimple. Ever.
On a separate note, I'm up-to-date on Fringe, which means I have to WAIT for new episodes. Sigh, why can't all TV be produced at once so I can watch the entire series in three or four 8 hour marathon viewings? If you need me, Mister Mogu and I will be working on a time machine: I'll get Season 3 of Fringe even if it unravels the Space/Time Continuum!
Only good can come of this...

Day 38
September 27, 2010 - Xi'an, Shaanxi Provence, China
Monday. Yep. But, really Wednesday, right? Since I had class Saturday and Sunday. But I have class until Thursday, which would now be considered Friday, and that's 6 days instead of 7. So, my school week isn't half-way done yet. So, is this Wednesday 1.0? Or do I need to make up a new day? Smarchday? Fjordsday? In Chinese, today is 星期一 , and I tell ya, I don't want to think of today as "Week Day 1."
If you haven't guessed just yet, I went to class today, and then...yeah. It's still raining, what can I do? Making plans for my week-long break. More on that later, if the plans work out.
In the meantime, please enjoy this picture of Mister Mogu (蘑菰先生, "Mister Mushroom"):

Mister Mogu. Not just a tissue holder, also the closest thing I have to a roommate in China.
Happy Fjordsday, everyone.

Day 33
September 22, 2010 - Xi'an, Shaanxi Provence, China
This week isn't really going so well. I mean, not really. Today is the beginning of the Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节). This is the celebration of the Chinese Moon Goddess who makes medicine for the other gods and lives on the moon with a jade rabbit. Or something. It involves eating moon cakes, mostly, in my estimation, although everyone I know is tired of them already.
In any case, there were some loose plans to go SOMEwhere for this three day break. Those plans have not panned out, however. The weather, for one, is terrible. On Monday, it was still summer. Today? It's winter, inexplicably. The temperature dropped from nearly 35°C (95°F) to about 15°C (59°F). It's very strange, indeed.
In any case, it looks like this little break ours will be spent in my hotel room. Sigh.

Xmas. The mall seems to think its Christmas already. Well, actually, I don't think they ever take the decorations down.
